What is a Communication Board?
A communication board is a tool that helps people to communicate by pointing to their message. Some people might use it instead of speaking while others might use it with their spoken communication.
It has pictures, symbols, or words that a person can point to so that they can show what they want, need, or feel.

How to use a communication board
Some people might use a communication board independently while others will benefit from seeing others use it.
-
Get close to the board so that everyone can see the symbols and words.
-
Point to the symbols on the board as you say your message.
For example:
Point to let’s, go, slide, and say, “Let’s go on the slide!”
Point to eat and say, “I’m hungry, I need something to eat” -
Encourage the individual to use the board to communicate what they need.
-
Slow down and be patient. Give the person time to look, think, and respond.
-
Use it for choices.
For example, point to swing and slide and say, “Do you want to go on the swing or slide?”
